Starfield Ultimate

Starfield Ultimate gives the characters in Bethesda's Starfield their voice back, and the player theirs: hold a key, speak, and the person opposite answers, freely, in their own voice.

Starfield Ultimate gives the characters in Bethesda's Starfield their voice back, and the player theirs: hold a key, speak, and the person opposite answers, freely, in their own voice.

Starfield is Bethesda's first new universe in a quarter of a century, a thousand star systems wide. And yet every conversation in it runs through a menu of preset lines, and every character says only what is in the script. In September 2026 Orbit builds a voice layer for it, as its own project: hold the key and speak, and you get a freely worded answer in the character's cloned voice, with subtitles, facial animation and, if the character wants, an action. The game offers no interface for any of this. Who is standing nearby, which voice a character has and which lines the menu shows must be read from the running game, without guessing. In the end, there is a microphone on the desk, and the galaxy is listening.

• Speak instead of click • 1,073 cloned voice types • 420 characters individually tuned • One memory per character • Actions on request • Persuasion with your own voice • A test bench for every answer • One-click install

From sentence to voice

While the key is held, audio is recorded; on release, the sentence is transcribed. The addressee is, first, the person you call by name, then the one in your crosshairs, then the nearest person in front of you. A language model on Orbit's own server writes the answer, the cloned voice speaks it, and the game shows it in its own subtitle field. Between question and answer there is no menu any more, only a conversation.

Who listens, who remembers

Only the person addressed may answer; anyone standing further away merely keeps what was said as a memory. Each character has its own memory: what you tell one character, the next does not know. Ask someone for something and they weigh up how willing they are, and if they agree, the game carries out the action while they are still speaking: follow, wait, act, draw a weapon, flee. Characters become real conversation partners.

A voice for every body

The game's own lines yield 1,073 voice types, and the 420 voices of the named characters are individually tuned. Every cloned voice is checked against real lines of the same character that were not used for cloning. If a recording is missing, the game's data decides the substitute: robots sound like robots of their model, and Vasco sounds like Vasco, even when you ask him whether he actually likes you.

Persuasion, measured

When a dialogue is open, your voice picks the line: what you say is compared with the lines the menu offers, and the game speaks the intended one itself, with all its consequences. In a persuasion challenge, the points come from the game's data: 193 challenges with more than a thousand arguments. A test bench talks to the people nearby through the same channel as the microphone and measures every answer: the right person, the right voice, and a secret stays with the person you told it to.

One click to the first question

To keep it from staying in the lab, Starfield Ultimate installs with one click: on an empty game folder in about two minutes, with everything it depends on. After that, all it takes is the key, and the same game feels like a different one.

Once you have asked

Starfield Ultimate runs internally and is not public, because it builds on mods by other authors. Next, the mouth will follow individual words rather than just the sound, and a co-op server will bring a second player into the same galaxy. Anyone who has asked a question out loud in a bar in New Atlantis and got an answer that was in no script will not want to go back to clicking menu lines.
