Leadership diagnostics is a market of big names. International instruments such as DISC, Hogan or Insights Discovery dominate HR departments, have long been online and deliver their reports at the push of a button. Alspective counters them with a model of its own, Care, Share and Dare, yet in 2018 the evaluation still runs on Excel automations. To hold its ground, the method needs to move into the browser: a test a manager completes without installing anything, a report that is available immediately and up to the brand's standards, and a licence model that grows with every new company. Alspective's first fully web-based assessment is built at Nantys AG, in about four months, years before Orbit was founded.

• Online test with a licence code • Report of up to 16 pages with dynamic charts • Norms in the hands of the experts • German, English, French • Licences per company at the push of a button • Live progress of every test • Maintenance on a fixed schedule • More than 500 tests completed

A code instead of an account

Anyone testing managers cannot afford a barrier at the entrance. So the test begins with a licence code: one field, one button, and the self-assessment begins. At the end the answers become a report of up to 16 pages with dynamic charts. The company always receives it; whether the person tested gets it too is the company's decision. That leaves room for what makes a good assessment: the personal conversation about the result.

The method stays with its makers

The value of a diagnostic method lies in its norms, and they belong to Alspective's experts. So they maintain them themselves, in three languages and without a development team: for each dimension and scale they set which range of raw scores corresponds to which stanine and how much weight it carries in the report's chart. The knowledge stays where it was created, and the method can evolve without waiting for a single line of code.

Licences as a business model

Companies buy licences, and every licence is a test. New batches are created in a single step: choose the company, enter the number, "Generate". A colour shows the status of every licence, available, sent or used, and a bar shows how far a person has got in the test. Every report opens in the language required, right in the browser. What used to be manual work now scales with every company that joins.

Built for the rush

An assessment rarely happens in isolation. When a company tests its whole management team on the same morning, the platform has to hold up. A stress test with 500 simultaneous requests proves it: the mean response time is 122 milliseconds at the first measuring point and 114 at the last. After launch the platform is maintained on a fixed schedule, month by month from May 2018 to October 2019, checking availability, browsers, login, mail delivery and licences.

More than 500 tests later

More than 500 tests are run on the platform, and the last maintenance report records an error-free website. Alspective is an early lesson in something that still goes into every Orbit project today: you do not digitise an expert method by rebuilding it, but by putting the tools into the experts' hands.
